The Tesla Roadster update that will increase its range will probably arrive in August.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk posted the news to his Twitter account, saying safety validation for the new Roadster battery “should complete safety validation by the end of July,” and that the enhancement should be available the following month. The update is expected to give the Roadster range in excess of 400 miles courtesy of a new lithium-ion battery back that is the same size as the current pack, but with the ability to store about 31 percent more energy.

Aside from adding a more energy dense battery, Telsa’s Roadster 3.0 update will also come with improved wheel bearings and low rolling resistance tires that will help it achieve the claimed range improvements. Along with that, the car will also get aerodynamic tweaks to lower its drag coefficient from 0.36 to 0.31.

In total, the update is expected to enhance range by between 40 and 50 percent, or enough to carry the car from San Francisco to Los Angeles.

Tesla still hasn’t announced that it plans to charge Roadster owners for the upgrade.
